In Control of your Next Breath: The Lethality of Strangulation for Adults & Children

Workshop Description: Strangulation is one of the highest-risk domestic violence behaviors—even a single strangulation incident increases someone’s risk of being killed by their partner by 750%. This training with OFS’s Becky Bullard will explore the danger of strangulation, the prevalence of strangulation crimes in our community, the impact on victims, and best practices for working with clients who have been strangled.

Children specifically: Strangulation is a high-risk abusive behavior that can seriously injure or kill a young person; however, there are multiple misconceptions around strangulation that have contributed to a lack of identification and even normalization of this dangerous crime. This training will explore the impact of strangulation perpetrated by family members or other trusted adults to children as well as the concerning trend with youth of strangulation within young dating relationships.

Objectives:

  1. Clarify the term strangulation & understand how strangulation occurs.
  2. Recognize the signs and symptoms of strangulation in children and youth, and how these can impact their physical and mental health.
  3. Identify multiple collaborative solutions and resources to assist with strangulation identification and response.

Intersections of Trauma: Human Trafficking, Sexual Violence, and Strangulation

Workshop Description: Victims of human trafficking often endure overlapping forms of abuse, including sexual violence and strangulation, resulting in compounded trauma and heightened risks to their safety. This training delves into the critical intersections of these crimes, emphasizing the profound impact of poly victimization and the unique challenges survivors face. Participants will learn to identify risk factors, understand the short- and long-term effects of trauma, and develop survivor-centered strategies to enhance safety and recovery. This session equips professionals with the tools to provide nuanced, trauma-informed responses while fostering collaboration across disciplines to support survivors effectively.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Recognize the connections between human trafficking, sexual violence, and strangulation, and their implications for victim risk and safety.
  2. Understand the impact of poly victimization and compounded trauma on survivors and their recovery journeys.
  3. Develop trauma-informed, survivor-centered approaches to enhance safety planning, improve systemic responses, and address the unique needs of victims experiencing overlapping forms of violence.
