The Impact of IPV on Survivors & Perpetrators: A Guide for BIP Facilitators

Description: This workshop is designed for facilitators of Batterers’ Intervention Programs (BIPs) to deepen their understanding of the profound impact of interpersonal violence on victims and survivors, as well as the dynamics and tactics employed by perpetrators. Participants will explore the psychological, emotional, and physical effects of abuse on victims, gaining insights into the long-term consequences and challenges they face. The workshop will also examine the behavior patterns, manipulation tactics, and power dynamics used by perpetrators to control and harm their victims. Through case studies, expert presentations, and interactive discussions, facilitators will enhance their ability to effectively address these issues within their programs, fostering a more empathetic and informed approach to intervention.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understanding the Impact of Interpersonal Violence on Victims and Survivors
    • Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the various forms of interpersonal violence and their psychological, emotional, and physical impacts on victims and survivors.
    • Attendees will learn about the long-term consequences of abuse, including trauma responses, mental health challenges, and barriers to recovery.
  2. Analyzing Perpetrator Dynamics and Tactics
    • Participants will explore the common behavior patterns and tactics used by perpetrators to exert control and inflict harm on their victims, such as manipulation, intimidation, and coercion.
    • Attendees will examine the power and control dynamics inherent in abusive relationships and understand how these tactics affect victims’ ability to seek help and leave abusive situations.
  3. Enhancing Intervention Strategies in BIPs
    • Participants will learn how to incorporate a victim-centered perspective into their intervention strategies, ensuring that their programs address the needs and experiences of victims and survivors.
    • Attendees will develop skills to effectively challenge perpetrators’ justifications for their behavior, promote accountability, and support positive behavioral change within their programs.
