Workshop Description: Interpersonal violence can have profound effects on a patient’s health and well-being. This workshop is designed to equip medical providers with the skills and knowledge necessary to effectively screen for, recognize, and respond to signs of interpersonal violence. Participants will learn to identify red flags in patients, understand the health impacts of interpersonal violence, utilize screening and assessment tools, and develop the communication skills needed to discuss interpersonal violence with patients sensitively and effectively.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify Red Flags and Health Impacts: Participants will learn to recognize the physical, emotional, and behavioral signs of interpersonal violence in patients and understand the short-term and long-term health impacts of such violence on individuals.
  2. Utilize Screening and Assessment Tools: Participants will gain proficiency in using validated screening and assessment tools to identify patients experiencing interpersonal violence, ensuring accurate and consistent identification and documentation.
  3. Develop Communication and Intervention Skills: Participants will enhance their skills in discussing interpersonal violence with patients, including how to approach the topic sensitively, provide appropriate support, and connect patients with relevant resources and services for further help.

Advanced Interventions for Interpersonal Violence: Safety Planning and Risk Assessment for Medical Providers

Workshop Description: Building on foundational knowledge of screening and recognizing interpersonal violence, this advanced workshop equips medical providers with the skills and strategies needed for effective safety planning and risk assessment. Participants will learn to conduct thorough risk assessments, develop personalized safety plans, and coordinate care with other professionals to ensure comprehensive support for patients experiencing interpersonal violence.

  1. Conduct Comprehensive Risk Assessments: Participants will learn to perform detailed risk assessments for patients experiencing interpersonal violence, understanding the various factors that contribute to risk and how to evaluate the immediate and long-term safety concerns of patients.
  2. Develop Personalized Safety Plans: Participants will gain the skills to create individualized safety plans that address the unique needs and circumstances of each patient, including strategies for immediate safety, long-term protection, and connecting patients with supportive resources.
  3. Coordinate Multidisciplinary Care: Participants will explore best practices for collaborating with other professionals, such as social workers, law enforcement, and community organizations, to provide a cohesive and integrated response that enhances patient safety and support.
